I decided that we needed something a little different from the Season 3 spoiler thread now that S3 is in full swing. (And I mostly just want a place to ramble and engage in crazy speculative conversations.)
Themes: Is the theme of this season that whenever someone triumphs, there's always someone else sitting there defeated? Because that's what it seems like to me. In a show about competitve show choirs, there's bound to be losing and winning galore, but S3 seems...less black and white, and the stakes are higher than just "who gets a solo."
Observe:
- Shelby and Quinn. I completely sympathized with Quinn wanting her baby girl back. She gave birth to Beth, and under all that ice and anger, it must be ripping her apart inside. But Shelby has been raising that little girl from day one. It's obvious how much she loves her. She is Beth's mom, no doubt about it--and a much better one than a criplingly depressed, chain-smoking high schoool bully. No matter what happens, a lot of people are going to get hurt.
- Brittany and Kurt. Is there any way they could both be class president? No...one of them is going to fail miserably, and it's probably going to be Kurt (in his most comedic, lighthearted season yet! =D) IAU was just an amazing episode for Brittany; we got another of those flashes of how it hurts when people laugh at her, and just how much of a sweetheart she can be. But Kurt running for president of the class that elected him prom queen is going to be so hard to watch. I'm not sure how much an extracurricular would really help his college bid right now (even if his GPA is stellar, I don't think he has a chance at top schools), but he does need it more, and I think he'd actually be a great president (planning that wedding in under a week, anyone?). It's going to be hard to see one of them lose.
- Blaine and Kurt. I think I've beaten this to death elsewhere. >.> Suffice it to say that while Blaine deserves that role and Kurt shouldn't blame him for it, I don't think we're seeing Kurt act like a selfish diva so much as Blaine coming to represent everything that Kurt hates about himself. I feel for both of them. I think it's going to be a lovely dark and ironic twist...that little moment where the things he loves about Blaine became inextricably tangled up with the things he doesn't love about himself. How can Chris do that with like two facial expressions? Anyway, no matter what either of them do next, I don't think they'll ever be quite the same now. Hopefully they come out of all of it stronger, with a better understanding of each other's personalities and more realistic expectations for their relationship. Seeing how Kurt shuts down and Blaine appears to dislike conflict, though, I think they might just end up pushing each other away for a while. (Which, just based on the way they look at each other, is not going to be fun for either of them.) I suspect "Look. Kurt. This boy loves you and despite your denial, you love him" is going to be necessary.
- Rachel and Mercedes. It appears that there'll be more fodder for an analysis of these two in 3x03, but we're already getting hints of it.
