DIVA: Do I need to explain Mercedes? She’s one of the most talented singers in Lima, Ohio. The only reason she, Rachel, Kurt and Santana haven’t shared lead on a group number is simply fear that their combined voices would cause a sex riot the likes of which Ohio has never seen. Mercedes is constantly craving the spotlight, sick of being a ‘wail on the last note’ fallback for Mr. Schue. Although she lacks the in-your-face drive and ambition of divas such as Rachel and Charlie, Mercedes simply relies on the incredibly power of her rarely used voice to blow away any doubt in the audiences mind that she belongs in the spot light and heaven help those who try to suggest otherwise.
HASTY: There’s many a night Mercedes lays her head on the pillow and has a list of things to mentally kick herself for. She always allows her opinions to just spew out of her mouth without properly thinking about what she is saying and the feelings of those she is speaking to. She tells herself that this is due to her conviction and strong views, but one day Mercedes would like to remove her foot from her mouth for more than an hour at a time.
LOYAL: A friend of Mercedes Jones will find themselves protected by the incredible loyalty and devotion of the diva. She will fight for anyone and anything she loves and it takes some mighty force of God to stop Mercedes once she goes into full attack mode. Mercedes’ most closely held and protect friends are Kurt and Rachel, despite her rocky start with the latter.
GENTLE: Although many may not see it, Mercedes is a very gentle, nurturing person when needs must. Always prepared with a loving pat, a warm hug and a sympathetic ear for those close to her that need it, Mercedes feels a compulsive need to comfort and advise those who she deems in need of it, whether or not they agree with her assumption.
INDEPENDENT: Mercedes certainly doesn’t need any help from anyone in achieving the goals she has set out for herself. That isn’t to say she wouldn’t accept help, nor that she feels she doesn’t need the support and love of her club-mates, but she knows that when high school ends she will have to rely on her own strength and determination and is perfectly prepared and ready to do so when the time comes.
HISTORY: Mercedes is the younger of two children, her older brother away at college, and is the treasured baby girl of two parents who treat her like a princess without spoiling her. From a young age Mercedes has been singing at church ceremonies and family parties, but as she entered McKinley and joined Mr. Ryerson’s glee club she discovered her true desire to be a performer. In sophomore year, after Ryerson was fired, Mercedes was one of the first to join the New Directions.
After getting over her initial crush on Kurt, the two became the best of friends, entertaining themselves by poking fun at Rachel and taking part in the baby drama. Sometime after sectionals the pair joined the Cheerios and Mercedes briefly dated Puck, leaving the cheerleaders and ending the relationship when she realised neither of those things were what she wanted.
Her Junior year saw Mercedes and Rachel begin to form a tight friendship after Kurt’s transfer to Dalton, revealing to Mercedes just how alone she was without her friend. Despite her original song, ‘Hell To The No’ not being ‘regionals material’, the New Directions still moved on to nationals, once again with Kurt in tow.
Now in her Senior year, Mercedes has decided it is time for a change. No more background singing, despite her close friendship with Rachel. Mercedes Jones is going to take her rightful place front and centre stage.
