What would happen if the mutations of Xmen occurred five centuries earlier?
Renaissance England is in full swing and the culture is thriving. Advancements are being made, and the invention of the printing press in the last century means that books and literature are becoming widespread. England is under the rules of the second Tudor leader, King Henry VIII, who is well-loved though worries are beginning, as he ages and still he had no male heir.
However, this time is not all peace and prosperity. Superstitions of times when pagan religions ruled still run rampant through society, and now it seems that old stories are coming to pass. Some babies have recently been born with the devil’s mark on them. Odd skin colors, extra limbs, disturbingly specific birthmarks.... Fear and panic spread through the superstitious populace, as many infants were murdered in their cribs, occasionally by their own parents, out of fear of what they were, what they represented.
On occasion, word of similar mutations filters through the grapevine, but over the years, the mass panic seems to have calmed somewhat. Only now, as other children of that cursed generation grow to reach puberty, other strange occurrences have begun. Whispers of devil’s work, witches, fairies, and other supernatural creatures strive to explain these events. Others say that the devil did not mark all the children so plainly. That some were marked on the inside, given powers from the devil himself to extend his reach in this world. That their own children are turning on them.
The town of Stafford, slowly growing to become more well known, is no different. No one had any idea where these are coming from, and if they’re a sign of the devil or even a punishment from God. As the people try to deal with them, they also have to try not to tear apart their society and their families. And though the people have many names for them, rooted in Celtic, Norse, and Christian superstition, the “official” name as they have been dubbed by the Vatican is malefichi.
